Carballes Baena Rallies Past Cressy In Marrakech

Roberto Carballes Baena earned his highest-ranked win of the season Tuesday in Marrakech.

The Spaniard rallied from a set down to defeat World No. 38 Maxime Cressy 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round of the Grand Prix Hassan II.

Carballes Baena, who was a quarter-finalist last year in Marrakech, held his ground while converting five of his 13 break points. Serve-and-volleyer Cressy, seeded fifth, stayed bold on his second delivery, but ended with 20 double faults to his nine aces.

The 30-year-old Carballes Baena will next meet Bulgarian qualifier Dimitar Kuzmanov, who beat Hugo Grenier 6-3, 6-4. Kuzmanov, 29, defeated the Frenchman in qualifying Monday before Grenier got in the main draw as a lucky loser.

In other action at the ATP 250, Italian Andrea Vavassori survived Santiago champion Nicolas Jarry 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Frenchman Alexandre Muller defeated countryman and sixth seed Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-4.

Thiem Back On Track With Estoril Win

Arriving at the Millennium Estoril Open without a win since mid-February, Dominic Thiem showcased all of his resilience to battle to first-round victory on Tuesday at the clay-court ATP 250 in Portugal.

Thiem defeated his fellow Austrian Sebastian Ofner 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch his first triumph in five tour-level events. The 29-year-old made a shaky start but broke his No. 122-ranked opponent twice in each of the second and third sets to prevail in a two-hour, five-minute encounter and set a second-round showdown against #NextGenATP American Ben Shelton.

The World No. 111 Thiem converted five of 16 break points he earned against Ofner, which proved enough to close out victory and improve his ATP Head2Head series lead against his countryman to 3-0. Some flashes of trademark brilliance, particularly off his backhand win, helped engineer the turnaround.

Thiem holds a 2-8 record for the year after Tuesday's win, which he will hope is the catalyst for improved results. The Austrian, who reached the Roland Garros final in 2018 and 2019, has historically excelled on clay. He has won 10 of his 17 tour-level crowns on the surface.

Nadal, Alcaraz & Auger-Aliassime Withdraw From Monte Carlo

Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz and Felix Auger-Aliassime withdrew from the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Tuesday due to injury.

Nadal is an 11-time champion in the Principality, where he has earned a 73-6 record. The Spaniard wrote on Instagram Stories that he is not ready to compete for the first time since the Australian Open, where he suffered a grade 2 injury in the iliopsoas muscle of his left leg.

“Unfortunately I am still not ready to compete and will miss one of those special tournaments I always love to play,” Nadal wrote. “Monte Carlo is and has been a key event on my career, but unfortunately I will have to miss it again since I am still not ready to compete without the risk of getting injured. I will continue the long process of getting ready to come back.”

Alcaraz, who is 18-2 on the season and fresh off a title at Indian Wells and semi-final showing in Miami, revealed two things that will keep him out of the season’s first clay-court ATP Masters 1000 event.

Shelton Shines In First Match On Red Clay In Estoril

Ben Shelton added to his season of firsts in confident style on Tuesday at the Millennium Estoril Open, where the #NextGenATP American prevailed 7-5, 7-5 against Constant Lestienne in his first professional singles match on red clay.

Until he competed in a first-round doubles match on Monday at the clay-court ATP 250, Shelton represented a rare case of a Top 40 singles player who had never competed professionally on the surface. The World No. 39 played two ITF World Tennis Tour events on green clay in 2021 but had previously only competed on hard courts on the ATP Tour and ATP Challenger Tour.

Despite falling to defeat in that doubles match alongside his former University of Florida Gators teammate Duarte Vale, Shelton showed few nerves upon returning a day later for his first-round singles match. The eighth seed took down the World No. 63 Lestienne in 95 minutes in Portugal.

The American earned decisive breaks of Lestienne’s serve in the 11th game of both sets to improve to 7-6 for the year. The tall lefty’s serve proved crucial to the win, with Shelton’s ability to give extra kick to his delivery a major factor in him winning 83 per cent (35/42) of points behind his first serve.

Shelton reached the quarter-finals at January’s Australian Open, during his first trip leaving the United States. His trip to Portugal represents his first time in Europe, and the 20-year-old acknowledged he was relishing another new experience in his whirlwind introduction to life on the ATP Tour.

The Australian Kubler defeated the former Top 10 star Verdasco 7-6(7), 6-0 to reach the second round of the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship.

Gaston Battles Past Struff In Marrakech

With the help of a local legend, Hugo Gaston made a winning debut appearance at the Grand Prix Hassan II on Monday in Marrakech.

The Frenchman, who is undergoing a coaching trial with Moroccan former World No. 14 Younes El Aynaoui, defeated Jan-Lennard Struff 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 for his first tour-level victory of 2023.

The 22-year-old Gaston clinched a closely fought contest by sealing the only break of the deciding set in the 11th game. He went on to wrap a two-hour, seven-minute triumph during which both players converted two of four break points.

Gaston will take on top seed Lorenzo Musetti in the second round at the clay-court ATP 250 as he chases his first tour-level quarter-final appearance since last June in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

Defending Champion Baez Holds Firm In Estoril Opener

After his title run on event debut in 2022, Sebastian Baez retains only positive memories of the Millennium Estoril Open. Yet the Argentine knows he needs to stay focused if he wants to maintain his unbeaten record for another year at the clay-court ATP 250.

That was evident on Monday, when the defending champion had to dig deep for a 7-5, 7-6(3) victory against Radu Albot to advance to the second round in Portugal. Baez dropped serve four times in his two-hour, 13-minute win but engineered five breaks of his own to prevail in the pair’s maiden ATP Head2Head meeting.

“Always the first match [back on clay] is tough,” said Baez, who reached the third round on the hard courts of Indian Wells in his most recent ATP Tour event. “It was close. I know him, he is an experienced player… To take the win [I had to be] strong in difficult moments, because there is pressure for me [as the defending champion] of course.”

Baez trailed 2-5 in the second set but raised his game to force a tie-break which he proceeded to dominate. Having defeated home favourite and former champion Joao Sousa, Marin Cilic, and Frances Tiafoe en route to his first ATP Tour title in Estoril last year, the World No. 32 feels comfortable in his surroundings in southern Portugal, even if this year’s event is being held three weeks earlier in the season.

“I know it is a different time, because this year it is the first tournament on clay in the season,” said Baez. “It is a time difference, it is colder than last year. A different situation, but happy to be back.”

The first quarter of 2023 saw a dazzling start to the ATP Challenger Tour season. Tennis fanatics witnessed the premiere of the Challenger 175 category and saw memorable moments such as Max Purcell’s Indian hat-trick, Nuno Borges’ biggest career title, and the surge of several young stars.

Purcell, who’s tallied a season-leading 25 Challenger-match wins, boasts an early lead for most Challenger titles this year after the Australian won three consecutive crowns in India.

The Sydney native left for the Indian Challenger swing with two things in mind: winning matches and spending less time on his cell phone.

“I made the choice to stop with distractions off court,” Purcell told ATPTour.com. “Especially through India, I wanted to be off my phone as much as I could. I wanted to make sure I was getting as much quiet time as I could and just make sure going into my matches that I didn’t bring anything else on the court.

Cervara Exclusive: How Medvedev Went From Cold To Gold

Daniil Medvedev earned his fifth ATP Masters 1000 trophy when he defeated Jannik Sinner on Sunday for the Miami Open presented by Itau title. It was the best moment yet of a torrid stretch for the 27-year-old, who also claimed crowns in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai and reached the final at Indian Wells.

Less than two months ago, Medvedev was No. 12 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, his lowest point since July 2019. Now he is back to World No. 4 with an opportunity to surge higher during the clay-court season.

After Medvedev’s Miami triumph, ATPTour.com caught up with his coach, Gilles Cervara, who revealed when everything turned around, why opponents struggle so much against the former World No. 1 and more.

Last year was tough for Daniil. The start of this year was tough. When did everything click and turn around?
For me, it turned around just before Rotterdam. I remember as a coach the three days in Rotterdam before the first round on court were very, very tough. I felt after the Australian Open, during two weeks of practising, but then a few days before the first round in Rotterdam, I felt Daniil quite nervous, quite not confident.

But I felt also he could play good tennis. My job at that time was to find the way to talk to him in a good way to find the good button inside himself to make him practise well and to win the sets during practices. That’s what happened.

Wrecking Ball: Medvedev's Bewitching Backhand

Nobody on the planet loves backhand-to-backhand rallies more than Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev defeated Jannik Sinner 7-5, 6-3 in the Miami Open presented by Itau final on Sunday on the back of dominating backhand exchanges through the Ad court.

The secret sauce of Medvedev’s flat, “knuckle-ball” backhands is that they are almost impossible to do anything with. They come at you flat and low, skidding through the court. They are not fast enough that you can use the raw power back against him or slow enough to step in and dominate. They live in a maddening “middle world” that bamboozle opponents into self-destruction.

Medvedev: 'Best Start To A Season I've Ever Had'

Daniil Medvedev is a former World No. 1, a Grand Slam champion and now a five-time ATP Masters 1000 titlist. For all his accolades, he may never have had a better stretch than the one he is currently on. His maiden trophy triumph at the Miami Open presented by Itau improved his 2023 record to 29-3 and earned him his fourth trophy in his past five events.

"It's the best start of the season I have ever had. Amazing amount of points won," said Medvedev, who now enjoys a 600 point lead over Novak Djokovic in the calendar-year Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin.

"I think 2019 was great also with six finals and it was also new for me in 2019. So I think it's kind of the same," he also said.

Medvedev won four titles in his breakout 2019 season and matched that tally in 2021. Just over three months into 2023, he has already equalled that mark with his 7-5, 6-3 victory against Jannik Sinner on Sunday, with plenty of time to add to it.

The 27-year-old was particularly happy that his recent run has come at events across the world, with all different hard-court conditions: He won titles in Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai and Miami and reached the final in Indian Wells.

Sinner: 'I'm Getting Closer & Closer'

Defeated but not dejected, Jannik Sinner was keen to focus on the bigger picture following his straight-sets loss against Daniil Medvedev in the Miami Open presented by Itau title match on Sunday.

The Italian advanced to the semi-finals at the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the season in Indian Wells and backed up that run by reaching his third final of the year in Miami. He leaves South Florida holding a 9-2 record across the ‘Sunshine Double’.

“It's always going to be a tough, tough challenge for me to play against [Medvedev]. But I feel like I'm getting closer and closer,” Sinner said. “Even today I felt like that the chances are there, so that's the good thing and the positive thing.

“The good thing is that after Indian Wells compared to here I have improved. I felt better on court. That's the most important,” Sinner later added.

Sinner is up two spots to No. 9 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings following a series of impressive results in South Florida. The 21-year-old defeated Top 10 star Andrey Rublev in the fourth round before he overcame top seed Carlos Alcaraz in an epic three-set semi-final battle.

Medvedev Wins Maiden Miami Title, Fourth Trophy Of 2023

Playing in his fifth ATP Tour final is a many tournaments, Daniil Medvedev continued his blistering form to claim his first title at the Miami Open presented by Itau. With a 7-5, 6-3 victory against Jannik Sinner, Medvedev improved to 24-1 in his past five events, which have reaped four titles.

After falling to Carlos Alcaraz two weeks ago in the Indian Wells final, the fourth seed was rock-solid against Sinner as he frustrated the Italian with his calculated baseline game. Medvedev is now 6-0 in his ATP Head2Head against Sinner, also having beaten the Italian in the Rotterdam final in February.

"I'm really happy. Today was a tough match. It was probably the hottest day and the most humid during the day," Medvedev said after winning his fifth ATP Masters 1000 title and 19th career tour-level crown. "It was not easy conditions. I don't know if Jannik had a small injury or cramp. I was also struggling, tried not to show it.

"I haven't won't such a big title in probably a year and a half," he added, not having tasted Masters 1000 glory since he won Toronto in 2021. "At the end I was quite shaky. Not even tight, because I'm not scared to win. But still the hands get a little shaky so the serve is a little bit tougher... I managed to get myself together and close the match."

Medvedev has now won five of the six hard-court ATP Masters 1000s and reached the final in the other (Indian Wells). The 27-year-old has also contested the final at both hard-court Grand Slams, winning the 2021 US Open. His success on the surface has also extended to the Nitto ATP Finals, where he won the 2020 title.
