Jeremy Jin’s blog: Competing at Longines Future Tennis Aces, meeting Agassi and Groth

Jeremy Jin, our Longines Future Tennis Aces representative, recaps his week in Paris and meeting Longines ambassador Andre Agassi and Australian Davis Cup player Sam Groth.

5 June 2017 | Tennis Australia

Australian representative, Jeremy Jin, enjoyed a weekend of shoulder-rubbing at the Longines Future Tennis Aces tournament in Paris. The Australian number one in his age group (born after 4 June 2004) enjoyed time with eight-time Grand Slam Tennis champion and Longines Ambassador of Elegance, Andre Agassi, who was in town celebrating his 10-year relationship with the premium Swiss watchmaker.

Agassi spoke to the tennis hopefuls about the tournament being an experience and not about winning or losing, suggesting the road is still long for the 12-year-old champions, so it’s about learning and improving and focusing on today and making yourself a little bit better, win or lose.

To finish off the weekend, Jin met up with Australian tennis player Sam Groth at Roland Garros where he provided some advice to the future ace and discussed his experience of playing at the French Open. Groth narrowly missed out on securing a spot in the quarterfinals of the French Open men’s doubles tournament over the weekend.

Sam Stosur beaten in Roland Garros fourth round by Latvian teen Jelena Ostapenko.

Paris, France, 5 June 2017 | Darren Walton, AAP

A hand injury has cruelled Sam Stosur’s French Open hopes and ended the veteran’s record 452-week reign as Australia’s queen of the court.

Stosur revealed she needed an ultrasound before suffering a painful fourth-round loss to Latvian young gun Jelena Ostapenko in Paris on Sunday.

The former Roland Garros runner-up was closing in on a fifth quarterfinal appearance in eight years before fading to a 2-6 6-2 6-4 defeat following a medical time-out after dropping the second set.

Happy vibes inspiring Stosur in Paris

Sam Stosur is ready for a French Open third round showdown with Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Paris, France, 2 June 2017 | Darren Walton, AAP

Sam Stosur is drawing on a decade of happy Paris vibes as inspiration for yet another French Open title charge.

Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and one-time finalist Venus Williams are the only players left in the wide open women’s singles draw boasting more wins than Stosur at Roland Garros after Australia’s perennial contender charged into the third round for the ninth straight year.

While refusing to look beyond her match tonight against American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Stosur – a four-time semifinalist and 2010 runner-up – admits her excellent record at the claycourt showpiece continues to drive her bid for an elusive second Grand Slam crown.

Kyrgios bows out of French Open

Nick Kyrgios beaten by Kevin Anderson in Roland Garros second round.

Paris, France, 2 June 2017 | Darren Walton, AAP

Grief-stricken Nick Kyrgios has conceded his French Open hopes were all but cooked when his grandfather died in April.

Australia’s last man standing crashed out of the season’s second Grand Slam in Paris with a 5-7 6-4 6-1 6-2 second-round loss to tough South African Kevin Anderson on Thursday.

Kyrgios entered the tournament under a fitness cloud – and hip and shoulder niggles undoubtedly contributed to his demise as the 22-year-old coughed up an uncharacteristic nine double-faults in the four-set defeat.

Jeremy Jin’s blog: Training with the Longines Future Tennis Aces

2 Avenue Gordon Bennett, 75016 Paris, France, 1 June 2017 | Jeremy Jin

I was nervous and excited to board the plane to Paris, it was the longest flight I have ever been on. I only had a few hours of sleep on the plane, the rest of the time I spent watching movies. We stopped off in Dubai and I was already wanting to get to my hotel room and sleep. The next seven hours on the plane felt like such a long time, but we finally made it to Paris. During the car ride to the hotel I was extremely tired, but when I saw the Eiffel Tower for the first time I got excited and instantly woke up.

I went sight-seeing during my first full day in Paris. Our hotel is right next to the Eiffel Tower so we walked there. I couldn’t believe how tall it was. We continued to walk along the Seine, there were so many boats on the river filled with tourists. We also walked up to the Arc De Triomphe, again it looked so much bigger than what I thought it would be.

On Tuesday we began our training camp with the Longines Academy. We went to La Defense where they have built a pop-up tennis court in the middle of all these buildings especially for the tournament. Half of the group stayed here and the other half went to the second venue, La Chataigneraie to practice. We all had lunch together afterwards then we split up again. This time my group played at La Defense. It was great getting to hit with the other kids and to see how everyone plays.

As part of the celebration we’ve hit the road with the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Racquets Roadshow and now we are halfway through our five-week tour it’s a good opportunity to reflect on what we’ve done, where we’ve been and why it’s so important to inspire children to get involved in a great sport like tennis.

Paris, France, 31 May 2017 | Leigh Rogers

Thanasi Kokkinakis might not have walked off court with a win at Roland Garros – but in one way he did.

Just being back on court was a milestone worth celebrating for the 21-year-old South Australian talent.

He had not competed at Grand Slam level since the US Open in 2015, shortly after his ranking peaked at No.69, as a horror stretch with injuries – including shoulder surgery and most recently an abdominal complaint – stalled his promising career.
