Jordan Thompson’s Queen’s Club adventure is over after going down 7-6(3) 3-6 6-3 to experienced American Sam Querrey.

Thompson, who shocked world No.1 Andy Murray in the first round, fought hard to fight back against the big-serving Californian but can now head to Wimbledon in confident form after a respectable showing in west London this week.

“I hadn’t been broken all match, then got broken twice in a row,” Thompson said.

“I had a love-40 opportunity and didn’t take it, that’s tennis I guess.

“I shouldn’t have even been in the draw so to get a couple of matches is some good preparation for Wimbledon.”

The world No.90, whose serve was so effective against Murray on Tuesday, battled hard in the opening set to stay in the match.

The 23-year-old saved break points in his first three service games to take it to a tiebreak but it was the 28th-ranked Querrey who took the first set after his fine return was sent into the net by Thompson.

But the Sydneysider responded well to that setback with an early break in the second set and held his nerve to take the match to a decider thanks to some excellent groundstrokes that troubled the giant American.

The pair exchanged breaks in the third, with Thompson’s sizzling forehand winner reducing the deficit to 2-1, but he was unable to close out the fourth game as Querrey immediately broke back.

Undeterred, Thompson hit three excellent returns in the subsequent game to give himself three break points.

However the 2010 winner held firm to go 4-1 up and then cruised to a comfortable finish to book his spot in the last eight.
