Pickleball Return

pickleballreturn

The pickleball return of serve is a critical shot that sets the tone for your team's positioning and control of the rally. While it might seem simple, a smart return can immediately put your opponents on the defensive.

Return of Serve Rules

  1. Let it Bounce
    • The return must bounce before you hit it—no volleys.
    • This is part of the two-bounce rule: the serve and return both must bounce.
  2. Must Land Inbounds
    • The return must land in the opponent's service court (not in the kitchen).

Goals of the Return

  • Buy time to get to the net (the ideal position).
  • Keep the serving team back, especially if they're trying to rush forward.
  • Set up a weak third shot from your opponents.

Types of Returns

  1. Deep Return
    • A high-percentage choice.
    • Keeps the server near their baseline and makes their next shot more difficult.
    • Tip: Aim about 1–2 feet inside the baseline for margin.
  2. Low Drive
    • A flatter, faster shot that limits your opponent's time to react.
    • Can force weak or rushed third shots.
  3. Topspin Return
    • Adds bounce and kick, making it harder to control.
    • Best used once you're consistent and can manage your margin of error.
  4. Slice Return
    • A backspin shot that stays low and slows the ball.
    • Can cause mis-hits if opponents are expecting pace.

Return Strategy Tips

  • Move forward right after your shot to reach the kitchen line quickly.
  • Target the weaker player (often the backhand side).
  • Avoid hitting too short, or the server will attack their third shot.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Rushing the shot and hitting into the net.
  • Hitting short and giving your opponents an easy third-shot drive.
  • Standing still after the return—always move up toward the kitchen line.
