Badminton Serve Basics
A good serve in badminton is about precision, consistency, and strategy. Whether you're playing singles or doubles, your serve sets the tone for the rally.
Types of Serves: 1. Low Serve- Purpose: Keeps the shuttle low over the net and forces your opponent to lift it.
- Used In: Primarily doubles, also useful in singles for variation.
- Technique:
- Hold the shuttle in front of your body.
- Use a short, controlled motion.
- Aim just over the net with a gentle push.
- Purpose: Sends the shuttle deep into the backcourt.
- Used In: Singles, to push opponents to the rear and create attacking chances.
- Technique:
- Stand sideways with weight on your back foot.
- Swing your racket smoothly upward.
- Aim for height and depth.
- Purpose: A surprise serve that looks like a low serve but travels high and deep.
- Used In: Doubles, to catch the receiver off guard.
- Technique:
- Use a quick wrist flick at the last moment.
- Disguise it well by mimicking a low serve.
- Purpose: Fast and flat, aimed at the opponent's body or corners.
- Used In: Doubles or fast-paced singles.
- Technique:
- Hit with speed and minimal lift.
- Great for surprise or aggressive play.
- Contact the shuttle below your waist (bottom rib level).
- Racket head must be pointing downward.
- Feet must remain stationary until the serve is struck.
- Stand inside your service box, and serve diagonally across the court.
- Practice consistency over power.
- Vary your serve types to keep opponents guessing.
- Work on accuracy—targeting lines or weak return areas.
- Watch your opponent's stance and anticipate their preferred returns.
