Badminton Serve Basics

A good serve in badminton is about precision, consistency, and strategy. Whether you're playing singles or doubles, your serve sets the tone for the rally.

Types of Serves: 1. Low Serve
  • Purpose: Keeps the shuttle low over the net and forces your opponent to lift it.
  • Used In: Primarily doubles, also useful in singles for variation.
  • Technique:
    • Hold the shuttle in front of your body.
    • Use a short, controlled motion.
    • Aim just over the net with a gentle push.
2. High Serve
  • Purpose: Sends the shuttle deep into the backcourt.
  • Used In: Singles, to push opponents to the rear and create attacking chances.
  • Technique:
    • Stand sideways with weight on your back foot.
    • Swing your racket smoothly upward.
    • Aim for height and depth.
3. Flick Serve
  • Purpose: A surprise serve that looks like a low serve but travels high and deep.
  • Used In: Doubles, to catch the receiver off guard.
  • Technique:
    • Use a quick wrist flick at the last moment.
    • Disguise it well by mimicking a low serve.
4. Drive Serve
  • Purpose: Fast and flat, aimed at the opponent's body or corners.
  • Used In: Doubles or fast-paced singles.
  • Technique:
    • Hit with speed and minimal lift.
    • Great for surprise or aggressive play.
Key Rules for Serving:
  • Contact the shuttle below your waist (bottom rib level).
  • Racket head must be pointing downward.
  • Feet must remain stationary until the serve is struck.
  • Stand inside your service box, and serve diagonally across the court.
Tips for a Better Serve:
  • Practice consistency over power.
  • Vary your serve types to keep opponents guessing.
  • Work on accuracy—targeting lines or weak return areas.
  • Watch your opponent's stance and anticipate their preferred returns.
