Badminton - Key Strokes

badmintonshots

This guide outlines the fundamental strokes used in the game of badminton. Mastering these techniques is essential for effective play, whether for defense or offense.

The Serve

The serve is the stroke used to start a rally. It must be executed legally, below the waist, and directed to the opponent's service court.

High Serve

This serve aims to send the shuttlecock high and deep into the opponent's court, forcing them to the back boundary line. It is primarily used in singles play to give the server time to prepare for the return.

Low Serve

The low serve sends the shuttlecock just over the net, landing close to the front service line. It is commonly used in doubles to prevent the opponent from attacking with a smash.

Defensive and Offensive Strokes

Strokes are generally categorized by the trajectory and height of the shuttlecock.

Clears

A clear is a shot hit high and deep to the opponent's backcourt. It is primarily a defensive stroke, used to recover position on the court or to buy time.

Smash

The smash is the most powerful offensive stroke in badminton. It is hit downwards with great force and speed, making it difficult to return. It is typically executed when the shuttlecock is high in the air.

Drives

A drive is a flat, fast stroke hit straight across the net, usually from midcourt. It is often used in doubles to maintain a flat attack and keep the shuttlecock away from the opponent's preferred attacking height.

Lifts

A lift is an underhand clear, hit from near the net or midcourt, sending the shuttle high and deep to the opponent's backcourt. It is a defensive move to push the opponent back and create time to reposition.
